Outside of the Staples Center (paperwork endowed) where the 97th College Art Association was being held, I recalled a very different Downtown circa 1991, which was still partly in shock from the Rodney King riots. Like most American cities in the past few decades, downtown LA has been transformed from an aging former commerce center to a new locus which forms around a convention center/and or sports arena. The same holds true for Dallas (benighted city!) which hosted the 96th CAA Conference.
